THE
RIVERBOAT WAIREKA 1908 LTD.
Step back in time and see the
beauty of the Waikato River and surrounding countryside
aboard the historical "Riverboat Waireka".
Our wish is to show people the pristine beauty of the
scenery and river. To share and inform people of its
history, both Maori and European.
We wish for everyone to leave us in awe of our surroundings
and astounded by
the beauty that can only be seen by boat.
To feel excited and privileged to have been on a truly
historical riverboat -
a part of New Zealand's history.
BOAT HISTORY
The Waireka
was built by Yarrow and Co. in Glasgow, Scotland and
shipped as deck cargo to New Zealand.
The boat was reassembled on the banks of the Whanganui
River and
officially launched in 1908. She was part of the historical
Hatrick fleet of
boats used between Whanganui and Taumaranui, carrying
cargo and
passengers.
The Waireka has a tunnel hull, twin rudder steerage
and a reverse
bucket design, which some say is the forerunner to the
modern
jet boat.
She is 19 metres long and 2 metres wide and is licensed
to carry 48 passengers. |
